Traveling the world with small children is totally doable.

My wife and I were both avid travelers before we met, and together before we had children. We’ve both lived on multiple continents and together have visited more than 45 countries.

When our son was born, we planned to use a large amount of our generous European parental leave (and vacation) to travel. Our son is now two and a half and has been to more than a dozen countries on four continents. He’s spent more than 10 months — a third of his life — away from home. We’ve now got a second son on the way (three years behind the first), and with that are planning for our second round of parental leave.

This site is mostly targeted to parents that are experienced travelers looking to continue traveling through paternity leave, remote work, living from savings, judicious use of vacation, or some combination of those. The assumption is that you’re aiming to be on the road for several months of your children’s first couple years.

While much of the advice here is practical, the main point I’d like to establish is: you can do this. You don’t need a nursury full of expensive crap to get through your first year or two of parenting. In truth, small kids are pretty easy to travel with, and changing scenery and weather that’s fun to be out and about in combat the monotony that can be a challenge in the first year of raising kids.
